Million Mile Embers

We rode along the cliffs above the crashy rocking shore
She was driving as I admired the pretty face she wore
The waves flew hard onto the sand of a little beach we found
Gulls rolled in and out again - we watched the sun go down...

(Chorus)
Behind the rain the stars are falling
Million mile embers
Tonight it is hard to forget
And harder to remember

She threw a log onto the fire and told me 'bout her dad
The flames made her look like a girl in a dream I'd had
But she was not my enemy and this was not a dream
We curled together on the sand and listened to the sea

Chorus

Before the dawn could light our way we woke with voices near
Four hooligans with lights and guns then filled my life with fear
They made me watch - I never knew what was her middle name
They shot me once and left me there to die and then it rained...

Chorus

I got up in an hour or two and made it to the road
The car was gone - my chest hurt bad - felt ready to explode
Tonight I walk close to home listening to the sky
A single gull flies through the storm - she seems to whisper "Why?"

Chorus
